"We were perfect together. Until we met."
Misha
I can’t help but smile at the lyrics in her letter. She misses me.
In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.
It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever…
And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us.
Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.
We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it?
Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances?
F*ck it. I need to meet her.
I just don’t expect to hate what I find.
Ryen
He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch.
Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should’ve gotten his phone number or picture or something.
He could be gone forever.
Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.
*Punk 57 is a stand alone New Adult romance. It is suitable for ages 18+.

SANDY’S REVIEW
Punk 57 by Penelope Douglas
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
*4 I like the way you lie stars*
Penelope Douglas does know how to keep her readers on the edge.
Punk 57 will hit you in the gut with its angst, emotions and surprising turn of events. Set in a high school premise, this story is packed with a strong thought provoking message for the youths. The struggle to survive or be on top of a food chain-this story captures the essence of every high school drama.
The story revolves around two teenagers Ryen Trevarrow & Misha Lare, who became pen pals when they were in fifth grade and continue writing ever since then. Downside to their friendship is they don’t know how the other person looks like in the real life and they aren’t supposed to look up each other on social media thus, nourishing their friendship over years by sharing all the best and worst moments of their life through pen and paper.
But what if when one finds out the other is living a lie?
I can’t tell you enough how compelling this story is and mostly how well its written and executed. The thing I love the most about this story is Ryen’s identity crises, kudos to the author for bringing Ryen’s character to life, humanising and redeeming her. Generally, when we come across a story that involves bullying, we usually see the pain and suffering of a victim, seldom about a bully but the author will put you in popular-mean-girl’s shoes, and make you see her struggle to be true to herself while also trying to fit in.
“We’re all ugly, Ryen. The only difference is, some hide it and some wear it.”
Signing off with my favourite quote from the book:
“You’re not alone. It gets better.*ARC kindly received from the author, for an honest review*
You are important, and you can’t be replaced.
Hang on.”
